Mini Zines.
“Mixed Media Mini Zines” takes you through the process of creating a traditional single-page, 8-fold mini zine…but with a mixed media twist! Completed in Roxanne’s illustrative and detailed style, you’ll learn how to create a zine that features both imagery and text. Through step-by-step instruction, you’ll learn how to apply various mixed media techniques for each page as Roxanne creates a zine from start to finish. You’ll also see how to brainstorm, plan, write, add text, and assemble the final product. At the end of class you’ll have a completed one-page zine ready for photocopying and distribution!
Mini Journals.
Mixed Media Mini Journals takes you through the process of creating a miniature, two-inch, accordion style, mixed media art journal! Through step-by-step instruction, I’ll show you how to assemble a kit, construct a mini journal, and create a foundation layer of paper and paint. The class then takes you through a variety of individual techniques, prompts, and illustrations to apply within each 2-page spread! At the completion of the class you’ll have a fully altered mini journal filled from cover to cover with mixed media art.
Lunar.
Drawing inspiration from the lunar phases, this mixed media class takes you through the immersive process of creating your own two-page art journal spread from start to finish. Through guided step-by-step instruction, you’ll explore how to incorporate intention-setting into your creative practice. You’ll also be given various mixed media techniques, teaching you: how to build first layers, use found photographs, layer with fluid media and gold leaf, and detail your work to completion. Additionally, you’ll explore unique techniques specific to Roxanne’s process, including: the lunar landscape, cosmic backdrop, ‘carving’ a photo, and puzzle piece painting. Your journal, like the night sky…is full of possibilities.
Lyrical.
Designed and inspired by Roxanne’s unique artistic style, you’ll create your very own two-page journal spread from start to finish. You will choose a song that you love or that inspires you, and use it as a springboard for your journal pages. Working through various mixed media techniques, the class specifically explores: the concept of synesthesia, composition and the use of a focal point, typography (and the designing of three different hand drawn fonts), tiered paint layering, unique art journal mediums such as oil and pan pastels, and of course – all of those finishing details that ultimately ‘turn up’ your spread to a completed work of art. So put a record on and grab your headphones…it’s time to get lyrical.
Spirits.
The Spirits course is a take on one of Roxanne’s most popular in-person workshops ‘Illustrated Mini Portraits’, which guides you through the process of illustrating a figure into an art journal spread. This course teaches you the process from start to finish and is appropriate for any skill level – we’ll build up a mixed media foundation, plan and draw a face, and illustrate a figure or ‘spirit guide’ into your pages. Other key techniques include: how to use composition and color, the use of a ‘wallpaper’ piece, creating variations to your spirit figure, unique illustration techniques like Roxanne’s ‘4-block drawing method’ and the use of a ‘faux-value scale’, and of course - how to finish your journal spread with whimsical and illustrative details. “Spirits” also features a bonus lesson on how to add ‘extras’ to your spirits such as objects, horns, and winged crowns. The spirits are waiting...
Hallowed Ground.
As humans, we are constantly burying. We bury physical things like love letters in a shoebox or a time capsule full of material moments. We also bury emotional possessions – like fear, a fading memory, or a dream. Within this mixed media class, it’s about grasping onto something you bury and making it sacred. Preserved, contained, and yet in a state of exposure, within the pages of a visual journal. The class explores: building a background with layered paper and paint, how to employ a darker color palette through the application of black ink, the use of unique materials such as oil pastel and tattoo ink, numerous illustration techniques through the creation of a ‘vessel’ and coinciding imagery, and of course – all of the finishing details that bring your journal spread to a completed work of art. What will you unearth?
Creatures.

Working in Roxanne’s unique style, you’ll create your very own two-page journal spread from start to finish. Through various mixed media techniques, the class explores: creating a background while employing the concept of a horizon line; expanding ephemera with a painted pattern; learning to sketch, plan and paint several illustrative creatures; and of course – all of those fabulous finishing touches leading you to fully saturated and a creatively chaotic journal spread! The Creatures class also features an additional bonus lesson, where you’ll learn a different take on how you might illustrate the creature figure. So what are you waiting for?
