Join us for the class, stay later for a hosted private artist’s reception in the courtyard of Way Art Yonder Studio. Mingle with Roxanne and the other artists, as you take in the late afternoon sights and sounds, and nibble on light hors d’oeuvres.

Class description:
Art Journaling meets Illustration in this mixed media workshop. Join Roxanne Coble and other artists in this brand new class, “Cacti”. She will take artists through the process of creating a two-page art journal spread that uses succulents and cacti as a visual focal point. Through guided, step-by-step instruction, you will build up a mixed media foundation layer, and explore planning a composition, the use of a split-complementary color palette, observational drawing and unique illustration techniques.

if you’re in the SoCal or San Diego area, join me won’t you? there are also several out of towners coming in for the class, so heck – maybe treat-yo-self to a last minute road trip. also to note, James will be joining me for the reception after the workshop! (so, expect some #croutcorner references, haha).

you can hop on over here to register for the class…I hope to see you then 😉

happy monday everyone! I hope july has been treating you well thus far – it’s been an incredibly productive month on my end…but more on that in another blog post…

today I am thrilled to share with you some upcoming workshops at the art lounge on 101 (located in encinitas, ca)! I’ve got two classes for october: a two-day workshop inspired by voodoo, and a class on miniature spellbooks. as you know, halloween and the month of october is my absolute favorite time of year – so I’m excited to get some spooky class offerings out there! side note: the two-day HOUSE OF VOODOO class is one I am particularly excited about, and a workshop I’ve been brainstorming in my head for quite some time now!

I’ve also got a two-day illustrated mini portrait class scheduled for november. that workshop is a student fav – so be sure to register early to snag your spot. same goes with those october classes, as space is limited! see below for all of the details, and I hope to see you in class!

+ HOUSE OF VOODOO
Saturday, October 1, 2016 10am – 4pm
Sunday, October 2, 2016 10am – 12pm
Gather round swamp queens, it’s time to make some bitchin’ and bewitchin’ art journal spreads. Inspired by voodoo (and hoodoo folk magick), this art journal workshop explores intention setting, charms, and symbolism in two-dimensional form. Register via the calendar on the art lounge on 101 website!

+ MINI BOOK OF SHADOWS
Sunday, October 2, 2016 1pm – 4pm
Macabre meets the mini journal in this mixed media class – where you’ll learn to construct, alter, and illustrate your very own miniature spell book. Through step-by-step instruction, we will begin by binding and constructing our two-inch mini journals by hand. Once our journals are assembled, the class will then take you through a variety of individual techniques, prompts, and illustrations to apply within each 2-page spread. At the completion of the class you’ll have a fully altered and bewitching mini journal featuring eight different miniature art spreads. Hop on over here to register!

+ ILLUSTRATED MINI PORTRAITS
Saturday, November 12, 2016 10am – 4pm
Sunday, November 13, 2016 10am – 2pm
This art journaling course takes you through the process of creating a two-page journal spread that includes an illustrated portrait or figure. Through step-by-step instruction, we will begin by building preliminary layers within our journal pages using a variety of mixed media techniques. After building up a foundation, you will then learn how to plan, draw, and paint an illustrative style portrait into your spread. This portrait instruction also includes variations of how to approach drawing the face and features, contouring using multiple layers of color, and detailing facial features in pen. As a special addition for the month of November – we will also embed typography into our work as an expression of what we are grateful for. from the weekend: workshop photos

it’s not very often that I share photos from workshops, but these were just too good not to! this class of ten students was put together by nancy walter and hosted in deanna h.’s beautiful home in the san diego area. deanna is also the talented photog that took these photos! it was a wonderful day of art making and a solid group of students. both experienced and non-experienced journalers dove right into the prompts I set forth and walked away with some really exciting pages…

honestly, it’s student groups like these that make me truly excited to teach art…thank-you all who attended for such a kick ass day!
