our wedding: the shrines

now, if I would have had it my way – we would have had a dia de los muertos themed wedding (or a halloween wedding). puffin shut down that idea pretty early and instated the rule: no skulls at our wedding. but of course, I found my way around it…

it saddened us both that there would be no grandparents at our wedding (as they had all passed). while we were both incredibly close to certain grandparents, we knew we had to honor them all in some way. in the early stages of planning, I always thought the idea of some sort of shrine or offering table would be the best way to go about it.

my mom of course, took it to a whole other level by making day of the dead themed shrines. there was a ‘shrine’ for each grandparent – made entirely out of vintage cigar boxes.

she transformed each cigar box with acrylic paint and mixed media collage. each box contained a range of unique items – from photographs and old letters, to rosary beads and votive candles, to bottle caps and paper flowers. we then added a festive assortment of ceramic figures to sit on or around the shrines.

we were specific about where these shrines would end up – they had to have some prime real estate during our reception. thankfully the smog shoppe made that job pretty easy, and we were able to line them up on its infamous (and re purposed) bookshelf.

we intentionally placed our sweetheart table just in front of the bookshelf. this was to signify that our grandparents would be sitting behind us or rather – watching over us – on our wedding day.

these photos completely encapsulate all of the diy & handmade elements that my mom & I put together. our wedding on a whole was a true labor of love. there was so much detail and thought into everything we created. and I’m happy to say, it all turned out exactly how I had envisioned.

oh my, where do I begin…

probably with my admitting to watching this video a minimum of five times a day. I’m pretty sure james thought I was crazy when I ranted about needing a videographer when we started the planning process. but now I know he completely agrees with me. it’s 100% worth it.

floataway studios did such an incredible job putting together this video for us. they truly are so damn good at what they do – and creative makers at the core. as our videographer (and our photog) they captured the most important landmark of the day – our ceremony.

we sort of took the easy route with our first look, and saw each other prior to our ceremony. two reasons: we wanted to get all of our photos done before our ceremony & reception so that we could party (am I right??). and second- to kill our nerves.

I didn’t even envision where our first look would take place, or how it would even go. thank god – our photographers staged the entire thing and lead us through it…

our wedding: getting ready

okay, so I just have so many amazing photos from our wedding that I have to break them up into batches! it’s going to be wedding overload, I know. that being said – I present you ‘part one’…

we chose the culver hotel as our bridal party hq not only because of it’s close location to our venue, but because it’s one of the coolest hotels in los angeles. with it’s history and whole vintage boutique kinda vibe – it was the perfect place for us to get ready before the ceremony.

we each got ready in our own rooms of course, and were surround by our groomsmen, bridesmaids and puffin’s parents (my incredible in laws). the moments leading up to the ceremony were surprisingly very calm! drinks were had, memories were shared, and it was the perfect balance of total excitement & bliss.

my absolute oldest childhood friend corey phillips did my hair as well as all five bridesmaids. it meant so much to have her in the room with me. it was just like when she used to do my hair when we were kiddos! being that we’ve known each other since birth, it was such a unique and special way to come full circle.

on top of that – my makeup was done by the talented alexis peterson, of whom I’ve known since kindergarten! I was feeling totally trapped and overwhelmed when it came to hiring someone to do my makeup. one facebook cry for help later, and I had booked one talented lady. funny how things work out that way…

don’t ask me who designed my dress. I honestly have no idea and would need to research where I bought it to figure that out. all I know is – I loved it. I never had that ‘OMG THIS IS IT’ sort of moment. but knew: if I didn’t have to wear anything under it, could dance in it, and felt it was very much a one of a kind – then I was sold.

pretty sure I squealed when I opened the email from our incredible photographers containing these preview photos. and, of course, I couldn’t even wait 24 hours to get them up on the blog…

it’s honestly a magical feeling to relive your wedding after being totally off the grid for over two weeks. remembering all of the little moments from the day, the ceremony, the reception – it just fills you with such joy. it’s an incredible feeling…(and was 100% worth all of the work).

wedding update & sign off.

I can’t believe that we are only nine days away from our wedding day. NINE DAYS. how on earth did we get to this point so quickly…

I think my gal pal bettina said it best – blogging and planning a wedding just doesn’t mix well. trying to cram all the last minute ‘to do’s’, packing for your honeymoon (which by the way, if your honeymoon is in 45-50 degree weather, it’s a million times worse to prep for), trying to get your house and dog situation set up while you’re gone, final meetings with our venue, and of course being mentally consumed by the day of wedding details – can most certainly drive your stress levels up & leave you with very little free time. I get the whole bridezilla thing now…I really do.

with all of that being said, I would consider this post my unofficial sign off. after our big day, we’ll be camping in iceland for two weeks with no connection to the outside world whatsoever (just the way we wanted it).

you know that line in rushmore where max fisher is talking to mr. bloom about vietnam, and he asks if he was ‘in the shit’? well, that’s generally my reply when folks ask how our wedding plans are going…

“we are in the shit.”

and by that I’m simply saying – we’re in the very thickest part of planning. last week was a big wedding week for us – mailing out invitations (whew), meeting with our day of coordinator & venue, dress fitting #1, suit fitting, and our marriage license. I can safely say, that at this point in the game, everyday we’re crossing off some ‘to do’ in correlation to the wedding.

in other news – I’ll finally be sharing our invitations with you! I’m hoping to get those up sometime later in the week…

whew – this week has been a bit insane – what with wrapping up a few freelance gigs & prepping ourselves for the big move. puff is actually out of town for the next few days, leaving me with a whole weekend to myself and about 50 cardboard moving boxes. let the OCD packing begin.

365 days.

in exactly 365 days (8-17-2013), puff and I will be getting married! the photo is actually EXACTLY where we will standing at our venue on the day we say ‘I do’. so surreal to be sitting exactly one year out from one of the most important (and exciting) moments of your life.
